DISTORTION VS OVERDRIVE

What's rock 'n' roll without a cranking lead guitar?!
Chances are that guitar was plugged into a distortion or overdrive pedal - but what's the difference?

DISTORTION
It's the sound you have heard a thousand times when a guitarist launches into a lead break. It takes many forms from 60's style fuzz through to contemporary metal sounds. It can add a "cutting edge" and loads of sustain to your sound.

OVERDRIVE
Is generally a more warm, natural (even subtle) form of distortion - although it can be used for "huge" lead sounds. It's also what you would use for laid-back blues. Created back in the days when guitar amps were valve and only had one volume control - you would turn up the volume control till it passed the point of sounding totally clean and began breaking up, creating that sound!

These days most amps incorporate smaller amps in the circuit called pre-amps. They are designed to be turned way up to 10, creating various levels of overdrive.

The good news is OVERDRIVE or DISTORTION effects can be found in a variety of affordable pedal units. So wait no longer - talk to your Music Direct Australia dealer today!
